PaStraLa – a paleontological database for geological surveys
At the geological surveys Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources and Geological Survey of Lower Saxony examinations of paleontological samples are carried out in different steps. After a customer hands in a rock sample to be examined, it is prepared mechanically and chemically in the appropriate laboratory. The extracted and investigated fossils allow the determination of the age and the conditions under which the samples were formed.
The relational database PaStraLa (paleontology, biostratigraphy, laboratories) documents each step to ensure quality management and stores all data produced in a digital archive. The database model is structured regarding the standardized recording of sample and analysis data, which have already been introduced in other fields of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources.
