Development of instruments
In order to explore the deep sea, scientists of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources need specially designed measuring and sampling instruments which are not available on the market. Therefore, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources develops numerous self-made instruments for the technical support of the geoscientific marine research. Commercially available instruments are adapted or modified for their application under special conditions and - often in close cooperation with the producer - developed further.
The large-scale instruments presently in operation for the marine research in particular are:
- sea magnetometer (brand: SeaSPY)
- sea gravimeter (brand: Bodensee Gravimeter Geosystem GmbH - BGGS)
- heat flow sensor (self-made)
More information: New vector gradient magnetometer used successfully for the first time
