German GeoBusiness Commission (GGC)

The German GeoBusiness Commission was set up in 2004 by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. It consists of representatives of the umbrella associations of German industry and fosters GeoBusiness in Germany.

GeoBusiness means added economic value from public geodata.

Spatial information has become an important instrument across the economy. For example, they can be used to establish a basis for decision-making or to develop new products. The uses and benefits of geodata are as diverse as the data themselves. The market potential of public geodata is put at several billion Euros. The German GeoBusiness Commission’s work provides a stimulus for the business community to activate the geodata market in Germany, both on a sector-specific and on a cross-regional basis.

Working with partners from the business community, the German GeoBusiness Commission engages in projects to improve the way the public geodata is used in business models. As a mediator between economy and public administration, it lends support to the stakeholders as they make licences and data protection rules transparent, reasonable and uniform nationwide.
After all, public geodata - provided simply, quickly and reliable - create viable new jobs and help to secure Germany’s economic future.

The Commission is part of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Germany and works in all sorts of bodies and geo-networks.

It offers services like moderation, mediation, project management and public relations and develops new services to make geodata useful and profitable for economy as well as public administration.
