Environmental Geology in Thailand
Report of the project:
Salinisation of soils in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima (Northeast-Thailand)
Source: BGR
In the project geological data of the environment are compiled and evaluated for regional planners. During the final phase a pilot area in the Nakhon Ratchasima Province (NE-Thailand) is investigated where soil and groundwater salinization have increased tremendously in the last few decades. Salinization is a major problem for agriculture and water supply.
A Soil Salinization Map 1:100,000 was achieved for the pilot area based on yet existing data (topography, salt content in groundwater, depth to groundwater, rock salt in the underground, salt accumulations on ground surface).
The recommendations given are to contribute to reduce further salinization by the rising groundwarer level in the lowlands. The groundwater recharge in the sandy uplands has to be lessened.

Appropriate measure are for example reafforestation, proper irrigation practices, lining of irrigation canals and water ponds and deep re-injection of brines.
