BGR Energy Study 2023 - Data and Developments Concerning German and Global Energy Supplies (Summary)

Development of global primary energy consumption from 1980 to 2022 and scenarios up to 2030Development of global primary energy consumption from 1980 to 2022 and scenarios up to 2030 Source: BGR, BP, IEA, STEPS, NZE

Even though global energy consumption fell during the coronavirus crisis, the long-term global trend steadily shows an increasing demand for energy. As in the years prior to the coronavirus pandemic, global energy consumption continued to rise in 2022.

The major challenge for the global energy sector in the next decades will be the realization of the energy transition towards renewable energies with net-zero CO2-emission targets. In Germany, important steps have been adopted to accomplish this energy system conversion. Besides completely shutting down nuclear plants in 2024, gradually coal fired power generation will be phased out. Steadily the share of renewable energies in the energy supply is growing. In 2022 their share of electricity generation already amounted to 46% becoming the largest source for electric energy supply in Germany. Increasing wind power and photovoltaic installed capacities are accompanied by increased use of biomass and the development of a hydrogen energy economy. However, natural gas will foreseeably be indispensable in the near-term to satisfy demand and secure energy supply, until primary energy production becomes climate-neutral by the middle of the century. Of all fossil fuels, natural gas has the lowest specific CO2 emissions during combustion.

In its biennial energy study, the BGR presents data on the global supply of energy resources and trade in the fossil fuels natural gas, crude oil, coal and nuclear fuels. The study also provides information on the global production of renewable energies, including geothermal energy and hydrogen. With these compiled datasets and scientific analysis , the BGR provides expert advice and contributes to an informed and fact-based discussion on the complex topic of global sustainable energy supply.
