Special targets in geoscientific basic research require new exploration methods respectively evaluation processes of the measuring data gained. Apart from a continuous further development of the marine seismic measurement and evaluation techniques, the development of new data processing methods is attached great importance to. To augment the validity of the measuring data, the improvement of the signal/noise relation through appropriate algorithms is one of the priority aim of data processing. New and improved seismic filter procedures (like the KALMAN filter) contribute to the support of data interpretation.

Seismic evaluation procedures are also usable for the processing of radar data in geophysics. By means of a newly developed airborne radar system to explore surface structures, the ice layer of the Antarctic has been mapped successfully in the scope of the research project GeoMaud.

In addition to the conventional processing of the seismic data, special procedures are developed and tested at BGR in order to obtain an improved data quality, a secure interpretation basis and further deposit-relevant parameters. Apart from these exemplarily presented methods to analyze dispersion waves and the CRS stacking method, wave-seismic approaches, wave-front modelling processes and AVO exploration are followed up.

Concerning the standard method for stacking seismic data, an extremely simplified velocity-depth-model reflecting reality only conditionally, is taken as a basis. The CRS stacking works with 3 model parameters by means of which also complex structures can be gathered. These parameters describing each the reflection of an underground model element are adapted via an automated procedure to the measuring data and used for the final stacking of the data.

The example of an interpreted seismic section shows the structure of a section of the active continental edge in the front of Java (Indian Ocean)
