Storage options

Depleted gas fields and deep saline aquifers are considered the most important storage options in Germany. Depleted gas fields offer good storage conditions, since they have already proven that they can hold gases in place over millions of years. In addition, exploration has already provided a good knowledge of the subsurface, and existing infrastructure might be used for CCS. Depleted oil fields have similar advantages, but in Germany are too small to significantly contribute to CO2 storage. Because of their regionally large extent, deep saline aquifers have the highest CO2 storage potential, but are still largely unexplored.
