Transborder Geology between Poland and Germany (GEOPOLD)

Begin of project: September 10, 2010

End of project: December 31, 2017

Status of project: December 31, 2017

The German-Polish project GEOPOLD brings together partners from the Polisch Geological Institute Państwowy Instytut Geologiczny (PGI), the State Geological Survey of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LUNG) and Brandenburg (LBGR), and the BGR. The main aim is harmonising the geology of selected reservoir and barrier rock units within the border region of Germany and Poland.

The project was divided into two phases. In the first phase, possible storage and barrier horizons in the eastern part of the North German Basin were stratigraphically defined and defined between Germany and Poland. Based on these definitions, the reservoir and barrier horizons of selected stratigraphic units were correlated by means of borehole interpretations.

In the second phase, the facies of the Lower Jurassic was characterized, described on a cross-border basis, and correlated resulting in cross-border facies maps. This included a detailed consideration of the lithostratigraphic units considering sequence stratigraphic aspects and the interpretation of borehole measurements, that can serve as input parameters for parameterised geological 3D models. With respect to parameterisation of geological models petrophysical parameters, such as porosity or temperatures, were further estimated on the basis of the borehole measurements already used in Phase I by using the method of basin modelling.

The results contribute to a better understanding of the distribution of reservoir and barrier rocks and their properties in the border area of Germany and Poland and serve as preliminary research for future parameterised underground models, in a way that procedures for the creation of a volume model and parameterisation have been developed.
