German National Data Centre (NDC)

The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) was handed the responsibility to act as a National Data Centre (NDC) within the International Monitoring System when the Federal Republic of Germany adopted the national legislation in 1996 to enact the obligations arising from its membership of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. The duties involved and its function as a National Data Centre are divided up into the following main aspects:

  • Making expert reports available to the German government on all issues concerning the verification of the CTBT.
  • Acting as the contact for the CTBTO (Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation).
  • Responsibility for servicing and operating four of the five German monitoring stations involved in the IMS.
  • Accompanying a team of inspectors when onsite inspections are carried out in Germany at any non-military sites.
