International Monitoring System (IMS)
The global monitoring network (IMS) consists of 321 stations comprising four components: globally distributed networks of arrays for seismic, infrasound, hydroacoustics and radionuclides. These are described in detail in the following pages.
Germany has five arrays incorporated within the IMS. BGR is responsible for these highly sensitive facilities: two seismic and two infrasound arrays in the Bavarian Forest and the Antarctic. A measuring station for radionuclides at Schauinsland is operated by the Institute for Atmospheric Radioactivity (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz) Freiburg.
