The work results and current states of research of BGR are published in, amongst others, reports, specialist articles, studies and fact sheets. The BGR Report regularly reports on the work of BGR. In addition, there are numerous publications by the specialist topic areas.

The BGR Report presents the work of BGR based on selected focal topics and informs about important events and occurrences in the current reporting period. The specialist topic areas of the four BGR departments (1 Natural Resources, 2 Groundwater and Soil Science, 3 Underground Space for Storage and Economic Use, 4 Geoscientific Information, International Cooperation) devise and develop numerous products through their daily work. These products include, amongst others, internal and external scientific publications. You can find the publications from the BGR departments on the respective webpages of the topic areas.

Tips for searching and ordering

Many of the internal and external publications from BGR and our employees are, as far as possible, available to download free of charge. You can download the current and former editions of the BGR Report on the web page for the BGR Report. The publications from our topic areas can be found with a download link or link to further information in the respective topic section under “Products” or via this overview page. When searching for specific publications, the internal search function and the Geoportal are helpful features. Publications that are subject to costs are available to buy on the book market as well as via Schweizerbart Science Publishers.

The BGR Geoportal

On the Geoportal, you can find documents, data sets, applications and web pages of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources. If you do not find what you are looking for on our website, the Geoportal can be worth a look. There, you can, for instance, search for documents and filter them by author, topic, sources, publication type and publication year.

  • BGR publications generally cover the geoscientific topics of the sub-departments and inform about the research findings, work and events of BGR and its employees.

    Among the focal topics of the BGR sub-departments are the following:

  • Are you looking for a specific paper or publications about a certain subject, but have not found the right result? The listed publications on the pages of the topic areas can be quite extensive. If you do not immediately find what you are looking for, we recommend searching the page by keyword (e.g. topic, author or similar) by using the search function of the browser (shortcut Ctrl + F).

    Alternatively, you can use the internal search function of this website – accessible via the magnifying glass icon at the top right or here. There, you can type in a search keyword and filter the results by topic, document type and time period.

    Another useful service when looking for publications and data is the BGR Geoportal. There, you can find BGR documents, data sets, services, applications and web pages and specifically browse them.

  • Downloading digital files and documents on the BGR website or Geoportal is generally free of charge.

  • Whether it costs something to order printed publications depends on the publication in question. Printed editions of the BGR Report, for instance, can be requested completely free of charge by sending an e-mail to info@bgr.de. If you wish to acquire printed products that have been published by an external publisher, you have to pay the standard commercial price in addition to any shipping costs incurred. Books from publication series such as the “Geologisches Jahrbuch” can be bought from Schweizerbart Science Publishers and on the book market.
