Geological information and boreholes

Accurate, reliable geological information about the subsurface forms the basis for any economic and environmental planning that involves the use of the subsurface and natural geogenic resources.

Our topics

  • General geological maps of Germany and Europe

    Geological maps and map series are today produced and published digitally. This includes both standardised internet services (e. g. WMS and WFS) and also providing the data in various file formats.

  • Core repositories

    BGR stores drill cores at its four sites in Berlin-Spandau, Celle, Grubenhagen and Hanover. The Grubenhagen site and a core storage facility in Hanover are used jointly with the LBEG. The National Core Repository for continental research drilling is located in Berlin-Spandau.

  • Stratigraphy

    Stratigraphy is used for the correlation and relative dating of rocks and rock sequences using geochemical, geophysical, sedimentological or paleontological methods.

  • Geoscientific Collections

    BGR maintains collections in Berlin and Hanover, here in cooperation with the LBEG. Further, the GewiS database facilitates online access to the collections.

  • Sampling and mapping equipment

    BGR deploys a variety of large-scale marine scientific equipment on its exploration cruises and research expeditions in order to study the deep sea. There are two types of equipment: sampling equipment (e.g. for rock and sediment sampling), and equipment for observing and mapping the seabed.

Accurate, reliable geological information about the subsurface forms the basis for any economic and environmental planning that involves the use of the subsurface and natural geogenic resources.

Geological maps, data and borehole information are required to support such planning. This information is the basis for converting data into information and meaningful knowledge about the structure, composition, and the genetic history of the subsurface beneath our feet and aids finding mineral resources.

The practical applications of this mapping and drilling information are of considerable importance and enable, among other things

  • the exploration of groundwater resources;
  • access to mineral and energy resources;
  • the development of geoenergy potential (e.g. geothermal energy, heating and cooling, energy storage);
  • the identification of geohazards;
  • the provision of basic geological information for science and research.

BGR provides the public with subsurface data and borehole information that has been generated, compiled and processed with care and to a high scientific standard.

Of great importance in this context is the cooperation with the State Geological Surveys of Germany and Geological Survey organisation in Europe as well as with universities, research institutions and other national and international organisations.
