Career development and networking
Both professional training and networking among colleagues contribute to long-term success and a high level of job satisfaction. At BGR, we offer our employees a wide range of training and networking opportunities.
Training and qualification
The training and professional development of BGR employees is based on the motto of lifelong learning. Those who regularly train and keep up to date with the latest developments gain valuable insights for their daily work and develop their personal skills.
This is why BGR offers their employees an extensive range of training opportunities: Whether on the BGR campus or externally, on the topic of geosciences, soft skills, IT or languages – there is a suitable offer for everyone. We also support our employees regarding further qualifications.
Executive development
Executive managers not only have specialist knowledge in their area of expertise, but also need valuable soft skills in order to respond to their employees’ needs, motivate them and lead them to joint success. Therefore, the development and support of our executive managers is very important to us. Both newly appointed and experienced managers can take part in numerous training programmes. We offer workshops, trainings, feedback sessions, peer counselling and management coachings.
Mentoring for new employees
Newcomers at BGR can take part in a mentoring programme. If you are new at the institute, you can request an experienced person from another department or even one of the other institutions at the Hannover site (LBEG, LIAG) to act as a mentor for you. Mentoring offers valuable help in the first few months and provides initial contacts to other departments. It should help new employees to network and quickly feel at home. The mentors can assist the mentees by giving helpful tips and advice, answering questions and being a supportive contact person in the first few months.
Junior Staff Circle
Newly hired and younger employees can join the Junior Staff Circle as an ideal opportunity for networking and exchanging ideas. The aim of the Junior Staff Circle is to enable communication about professional and inter-disciplinary topics and to introduce new employees to BGR by organising regular events such as monthly get-togethers, guided tours and excursions. The Junior Staff Circle is a point of contact for questions, facilitates contacts and offers an informative forum for discussions and the exchange of knowledge.
Early Career Scientists Club
Junior scientists can connect and network within the Early Career Scientists Club. This offers the opportunity to get to know other junior staff in the scientific field at BGR, to exchange questions and experiences relating to doctorates, postdocs and other scientific topics and to give each other advice and support.
Job shadowing
Looking beyond one’s own horizons and into other specialist areas and departments can provide enriching experiences and insights for employees and BGR as a whole. Job shadowing allows our employees to get to know another area within BGR, without having to change their own job. Seeing how colleagues in other specialist areas work (together), which methods and techniques they use and which results they achieve allows valuable insights and can contribute to improved work quality and more efficient processes.
In-house colloquium
Regular in-house colloquia take place at the Hannover site to further the cross-departmental exchange of expertise and networking. During the lecture series, employees and project teams present their research, studies and publications and invite participants to exchange ideas. The in-house colloquium offers an excellent platform for staying informed about project progress, presenting own results and studies and exchanging ideas with fellow experts.
