In order to further optimise the comparability, availability and thus the use of soil data, BGR is working - in close cooperation with the State Geological Surveys (SGD) of the federal states - on tools for the harmonisation and provision of soil data.
In this way, the requirements of INSPIRE and GDI-DE are also being implemented and the resulting utilisation potential is tapped.
Data entry mask
An entry mask is being developed for the digital recording of soil profile descriptions, with which users will be able to save their own data in XML exchange format in the future. Work is currently underway on a draft for such a format in accordance with the KA6 survey guidelines.
Tools for the harmonisation and quality assurance of soil data
Various database applications are available to improve the usability of newly collected data and of old data based on earlier versions of the Soil Mapping Guidelines (KA3, KA4 and KA5) and to enable the use in an international context.
Standards
While the diversity of digital soil data in web portals and services is already increasing, standardised metadata are still the exception. The EU project GS Soil has developed comprehensive examples and guidelines for metadata development. In connection with the exchange of soil data and the improved comparability of lab-analytical data, BGR is involved in many ring tests and in the development of standards (DIN, ISO, CEN). These activities serve to ensure the quality of our own data as well as to advise data users and providers on the quality and comparability of their own data.
