The Hydrogeological Map of Germany 1:250,000 (HÜK250) describes the hydrogeological characteristics of the upper, large-scale, continuous aquifers in Germany that are generally used for water supply.
The HÜK250 is a joint project of the State Geological Surveys (SGD) coordinated by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), which was launched in 2000. The reason for this was, and still is, the need to provide harmonised digital hydrogeological information for the whole of Germany for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD).
The development of the Hydrogeological Map of Germany has followed a continuous process of refinement and expansion. Initially, it was produced in a relatively short time using geological information on lithology, stratigraphy and genesis from the digital 1:200,000 scale Geological Map of Germany (GÜK200) and geological and hydrogeological maps provided by the federal states. These datasets were hydrogeologically interpreted and re-attributed with the support of regional expertise from the SGD.
Over time, the map has been systematically improved both in terms of content and technology. Key improvements included the redesign of the database and the introduction of a harmonised, standardised national legend. The map's geometry and content were subsequently revised and harmonised across sheet boundaries and national borders, with a move to seamless national coverage. As part of a wider Europe-wide effort, the scale was adjusted from 1:200,000 to 1:250,000 to ensure compatibility and integration with international standards.
Seven (hydro-)geological attributes were compiled:
- permeability,
- geochemical rock type,
- rock type,
- cavity type,
- consolidation,
- lithology,
- stratigraphy.
The respective systematics and classifications are based, among others, on the "Hydrogeological Mapping Guide (Hydrogeologische Kartieranleitung)" published in 1997, which was supplemented and revised during the course of the project. The result is the book "Fachinformationssystem Hydrogeologie: Standards für ein digitales Kartenwerk - Ergänzung zur Hydrogeologischen Kartieranleitung", published in 2011.
The HÜK250 is a digital map. The data are provided as SHP files or, in accordance with INSPIRE, as GML files via the BGR Geoportal. Visualisation is provided by the BGR Geoviewer or as a WMS service.
