The methods database in the FISBo BGR
Database and tool for soil assessment
In FISBo BGR methods database, selected, digitally implemented soil assessment methods are organised, documented and made available for soil function-related evaluations (‘method library’).
How are soils assessed?
One basis for soil protection is the evaluation of its functions (e. g. for the soil water balance) in the ecosystem. The soil functions defined and to be evaluated in accordance with the German Federal Soil Protection Act (BBodSchG) can be described by means of pedological evaluation methods using specific criteria. As a result, thematic maps on soil protection are created, which are an important basis for policy advice as well as for planning and authorisation procedures.
Where can I find information on pedological evaluation methods?
In order to facilitate the practice-orientated use of pedological evaluation methods, various federal states have compiled such methods. The aim is to standardise and document pedological evaluation methods to be applied on existing soil data. The collections of pedological evaluation methods also form the basis for the FISBo BGR digital methods database.
How are pedological evaluation methods structured?
Basic soil data (e. g. soil texture) are recalculated into new, more or less complex characteristic values (e. g. effective rooting depth; seepage water rate) via linking rules. These linking rules represent the essential elements of pedological evaluation methods. They are generally based on empirically determined correlations, whereby the target values are derived using mathematical formulas or from corresponding tables.
