e-SOTER logo

The e-SOTER project represents the EU contribution to a global soil observation system. Soil and terrain data, methods and applications are to be made available via an internet platform, which can be validated, supplemented and expanded using remote sensing. The data will thus be available for evaluations e.g. in the field of agriculture, environmental management, water management and infrastructure planning.

At present, existing SOTER data are only comparable to a limited extent due to the interpretation possibilities of the methodology and different input data, and are not available globally. e-SOTER is a joint research project involving 14 partners from Europe, China and Morocco, in which new data such as digital high-resolution relief data and remote sensing data are used to improve the outdated SOTER method. The project's research areas are located in Europe, Morocco and China.

The contribution of BGR to the e-SOTER project consists in particular of the following tasks:

  1. Creation of an international soil parent rock classification as an interpretation aid for geological maps to support data preparation for digital soil mapping methods
  2. Collaboration on the development of the e-SOTER data exchange format SoterML
  3. Testing of evaluation functions
  4. such as the potential erosion hazard
  5. Further development and validation of so-called digital mapping methods in the pilot area sheet Chemnitz 1 : 250,000
